The Need

Skin is the largest organ on the human body totaling about twenty square feet. People with skin of color (Asians, Blacks, Latinax, Native Americans and others from non- white ethnicities) will account for approximately half of the United States population by 2050, transforming dermatology. Preparing for this transformation requires an appreciation of the structural and functional differences in the skin and hair, as well as human behavior related to skin.

The uniqueness of skin of color must be accompanied with an appreciation of longstanding health disparities in dermatology both among patient and health provider. Without a transformation, those with skin of color disor- ders will continue to suffer disproportionately and often unnecessarily from dermatological diseases that are com- pounding other health issues
